Fletcher Prize – Press Release

17thC ChairIMG_6205Barbara Shaw with Joanna Foster president of OCG

The Fletcher Prize is awarded for excellence in Craft and I am delighted that my chair picture was chosen and  has been acquired for the Oxfordshire County Museum collections.

The picture was inspired by seeing a chair  at Chastleton House, a 17thC National Trust property in the Cotswolds where I have been Artist-in-Residence this year. I ‘paint’ with textiles and have hand-stitched many layers of fabric together in layers to produce the image. Different textured pieces such as lace, cotton, sparkly bits and chiffon all create light, colour and depth in my work. I try to engage the viewer in looking afresh at a familiar image.
